About Asbestos

Asbestos can be a dangerous substance if handled incorrectly.

The risk is from breathing the fibres contained in asbestos materials. The damage is caused by the release of asbestos fibres which are too small to be seen without a microscope. This happens when asbestos-containing materials are cut, drilled, or damaged or become worn or flaking.

Asbestos was originally hailed as a "wonder fibre" because of its heat and fire resistant properties and was widely used in homes and offices; you are most likely to come across it as boiler insulation or pipe lagging, in fire doors, or in garages as asbestos sheeting or insulating board.

What to do if you suspect you have some asbestos in your home!

It is difficult to recognise asbestos by sight alone. Do not panic if you believe you have asbestos in your home or garage - but equally do not just ignore it. Asbestos Risk Managment Services can help you to determine the best course of action, which could be:

  • The asbestos can sometimes remain in situ, with a record made of its location and checks made periodically on its condition
  • The asbestos can be encapsulated (sealed in) using special protective sealants formulated for the asbestos industry
